The Cohiba Robusto at a glance
Cohiba began in 1966 as a private cigar for Fidel Castro and went on general sale in 1982. At first it came in only three sizes. Then, in 1989, Cohiba added the Robusto, along with the Espléndido and the Exquisito. At the time, it was the thickest cigar in the range.
The Robusto measures 4 7/8 inches by a 50 ring gauge, or 124 mm. Its factory name, or vitola de galera, is Robustos. According to Habanos, Cohiba uses selected leaf from the Vuelta Abajo zone. Cohiba also gives some of its filler an extra, third fermentation, which is often credited for its smooth, grassy character. In 2019, Cigar Aficionado placed it in its Top 25 with 95 points. Our Cuban cigars guide explains the wider system behind it.
Construction and draw
Construction is usually a strength. Expect a firm, evenly packed cigar with a smooth, slightly oily wrapper in a colorado shade. The triple cap is neat and cuts cleanly. Most reports describe a near-perfect draw, with just enough resistance.
That said, Cuban production varies. A box with a slightly tight draw is not unusual, and a few cigars may need a gentle touch-up. Overall, the burn line stays sharp, and the ash tends to hold for an inch or more.
First third
Expect a gentle, refined start. Most smokers report hay, fresh grass and a light honey sweetness, sometimes with a hint of vanilla. Cedar sits underneath. The strength begins at medium, so the first inch feels approachable.
Second third
Next, the profile deepens. Cream and toasted nuts are commonly reported, along with almond and oak. Meanwhile, a gentle white pepper appears on the retrohale. Most tasting reports agree that this is where the cigar shows its balance best.
Final third
Finally, the strength rises towards medium-full. Leather, earth and coffee bean take over, while the sweetness fades. If you smoke too fast, this part can turn sharp. A slower pace keeps it rich.
How it compares
The obvious rival is the Partagás Serie D No. 4. It is the same size but earthier, spicier and much cheaper. The Cohiba is more polished and more layered, while the Partagás gives you more punch for less money.
The Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No. 2 is also the same size. However, it is creamier and lighter. Choose the Hoyo for a softer afternoon smoke, and the Cohiba when you want more depth.
Smoking the Cohiba Robusto in Malaysia
Malaysia’s heat and humidity are hard on Cuban cigars. Keep yours at about 65–69% RH and below 24°C, since warmer conditions invite tobacco beetles. A cigar stored too wet will burn unevenly and taste muddy. Our cigar humidity guide explains the target range.
For pairing, a local kopi-o without sugar suits the first third. After dinner, a lightly peated whisky or an aged rum works well with the later leather notes. Above all, smoke only where the law allows. Act 852 bans smoking in many public places, so check our guide on where to smoke cigars in Malaysia.
Watch for fakes
The Cohiba is the world’s most copied cigar. Check the warranty seal and box code before you trust any box, and read our counterfeit cigars guide.
Verdict
At its best, the Cohiba Robusto is refined, complex and beautifully made. Its grassy sweetness and creamy middle explain why it became a benchmark. On the other hand, it is costly, it varies between boxes and it is widely faked. It also builds to a strength that may overwhelm newcomers.
It suits experienced smokers who want a short, rich Cuban and who can trust their source. Beginners should start milder, perhaps with our beginner’s guide. Smoking also carries real health risks, whatever the score.
Frequently asked questions
How strong is a Cohiba Robusto?
Most smokers rate it medium to full. It usually opens at medium strength and grows fuller in the final third. A newcomer may find the last third too much.
How long does a Cohiba Robusto take to smoke?
Usually 45 to 60 minutes at a relaxed pace. Puffing quickly shortens it, but it also makes the cigar burn hot and bitter.
How can I tell if a Cohiba Robusto is fake?
Counterfeit Cohibas are common worldwide. Check the Habanos warranty seal, the box code and the band, and be wary of unusually low prices. Our counterfeit cigars guide covers the details.
Should I age a Cohiba Robusto?
It is enjoyable young, but many smokers find that a few years of careful storage soften the edges. Ageing only works if humidity stays steady at about 65–69% RH.
